2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee in Manotick

The Jeep Grand Cherokee occupies a unique place among today’s SUV market, combining truly rugged off-road performance with a level of in-cabin technology and comfort that’s hard to beat. Models are available spanning the whole range of performance levels, from the entry-level V6 to the high-end supercharged V8. However, until now there hasn’t been a plugin hybrid version of this best-selling crossover.

That’s set to change with the release of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee hybrid SUV, which shares the 4xe name and underlying technology with other Jeeps including the iconic Wrangler. What does this new model bring to the hybrid SUV party? Read on to find out.

Huge Hybrid Power

First of all, Jeep has pulled absolutely no punches when it comes to power under the hood. A standard 2.0L four-cylinder turbo gas engine is complemented by dual electric motors, which come together to supply a mammoth 375 horsepower and 470lb-ft of torque. This is impressive enough, but considering this powertrain outguns the 5.7L V8 version of the Grand Cherokee, it’s a clear indication of the strength of Jeep’s 4xe hybrid platform.

The output is passed through an eight-speed TorqueElite automatic transmission to all-wheel drive as standard, with selectable drive modes changing the balance between gas and electric operation for either economy or performance.

Range and Fuel Economy

In all-electric mode, the Grand Cherokee Hybrid is set to boast a maximum range of 40km, with a total gas-and-electric range estimated at over 700km without a refill. Details of charging times aren’t yet available, but Jeep has predicted an estimated fuel economy of 4.1L / 100km, an incredible figure given the huge power lurking under the hood.

Upgraded Interior and Infotainment

But the all-new hybrid powertrain isn’t the only updated aspect of the 2022 Grand Cherokee. The interior has also received a major redesign, with available luxuries including quilted leather upholstery, real wood trim, and a host of digital display options.

Infotainment functions are accessed via an 8.4″ touchscreen display on the lower trims, or a 10.1″ unit higher up in the range. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are offered as standard for easy smartphone integration, while the optional in-dash navigation features real time traffic and weather updates.

And to complete the high-tech picture, higher trims can be fitted with a fully digital gauge cluster, a 10″ head-up display, and yet another 10.3″ screen positioned directly in front of the passenger for media and entertainment.

Active Safety

Lastly, the new Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid is expected to ship with Jeep’s excellent suite of safety systems, with highlights including automatic emergency braking with passenger detection, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control as standard.
